Scaling a large catalog without the chaos
A hundred products is a spreadsheet. Ten thousand is a system. How to structure a big catalog so search, stock and merchandising still feel effortless.

A small catalog forgives a messy structure. A large one does not. As products multiply, the invisible scaffolding — categories, attributes, variants, stock rules — becomes the difference between a store that feels fast and one that feels like a warehouse search.
Decide your attributes before you decide your categories
Attributes — colour, capacity, material, compatibility — are how customers actually filter. Get them consistent early, and categories, collections and search all fall out of them cleanly. Retrofitting attributes onto thousands of products is the chore no one wants.
Let variants carry the complexity
- One product, many variants — not many near-duplicate products.
- Track stock at the variant level so you never oversell a single size or colour.
- Keep one canonical URL per product so your SEO isn't split across duplicates.
Search is merchandising
At scale, most buyers use search, not browse. Clean attributes and sensible synonyms make your search bar the best salesperson you have.
The goal of a big catalog isn't to show everything. It's to make the one thing a customer wants feel like it was waiting for them — no matter how many thousands of neighbours it has.
